Biocides – supporting substances
Biocides is a general term that refers to all substances with disinfectant properties. Biocides help combat harmful organisms, which in industry translates into efficiency and safety of specific processes.
Biocides are divided into two groups – synthetic and natural biocides. Synthetic biocides are substances obtained by humans as a result of production processes. These include artificial pesticides, herbicides and insecticides. Some biocides of natural origin may have similar properties.
Biocides in the paper industry
Water is an indispensable element of the paper industry. Fresh water is a habitat for numerous organisms whose presence in the medium can disrupt the production process and/or contribute to accelerated wear and tear of machinery and equipment. Therefore, biocides are often used in paper production and processing, primarily to disinfect fresh water supplied for production.
It is important to remember that biocides do not act selectively, meaning they eliminate all organisms of a given type from a specific environment with equal effectiveness. Therefore, their selection should be guided by performance considerations and tailored to the needs of the particular production process.
For microbiological control, measurements such as ATP, pH, redox, Cl2 are used.
